Opportunities - National Wildlife Areas
Project: National Wildlife Areas (NWAs)
Objective: Stop impending crises in federally protected wildlife areas
Description: Nature Canada supporters have already made it clear how much they care about NWAs by vehemently opposing plans to expand drilling inside the federally protected Suffield National Wildlife Area. Because NWAs are home to hundreds of migrating birds and at risk species, Nature Ambassadors can help make similar progress on behalf of other NWAs like Last Mountain Lake in Saskatchewan. Last Mountain Lake was established in 1887 as Canada’s first wildlife area.
Today, it is one of the Prairie's most important refuelling stations for waterfowl on their way from the Arctic to their wintering ground in the Americas. Nature Canada is urging the government to announce a funded plan to complete and manage a network of NWAs, including updating its legal and policy framework in 2009. We must encourage the federal government to step up to the plate and ensure that these fragile areas receive the resources and attention they so desperately need.
Fundraising Goal: $125,000
