How many are left? The Pacific population was facing imminent extinction, but is now considered critically endangered.
Why are they endangered? Accidental capture or entanglement, collision with boats and ingestion of garbage appear to be the major threats to leatherbacks in Pacific waters.
How does your support help? Nature Canada has called for the establishment of a national system of marine protected areas by 2012, which would result in 14 new national marine conservation areas.
Project: Parks & People
Objective: Engage another 50,000 children in nature in 2009
Description: By connecting urban youth to nature through fun hands-on learning experiences at a natural park, Parks and People fosters an awareness, understanding and appreciation of nature. This fun and innovative program encourages kids to explore wild places in their community backyards, nurture their natural curiosity about wetlands and learn the value of a healthy environment. So far, this program has successfully introduced 45,000 kids to nature, and our goal is to more than double this number. Nature Ambassadors help promote a powerful nature ethic in our society – mobilizing young Canadians to care about, conserve and celebrate this country’s magnificent natural heritage.
