Woodland Caribou
How many are left? Population surveys prior to 2002 estimate there are 33,000 forest-dwelling caribou in the Boreal Population.
Why are they endangered? Habitat destruction, hunting, disturbance by humans (including construction of roads and pipelines), and predation have all contributed to the decline of Woodland Caribou.
How does your support help? Nature Canada urged the federal government to create a science advisory group to determine the critical habitat for the Boreal Caribou and have that critical habitat formally included in the recovery plan.

Objective: Ensure species at risk are protected by effective legislation
Description: Nature Canada led a multi-year to establish federal endangered species legislation. Nature Canada continues to be at the forefront of the battle to ensure that this essential piece of legislation is both preserved and strengthened. This is a unique, one-time only opportunity to ensure our country’s endangered species legislation provides the best possible protection for the 566 species at risk in Canada. Our strategy includes assessing how the federal government has been implementing the act, monitoring the development of recovery plans, and supporting on-the-ground efforts to protect the habitats of species at risk. Nature Ambassadors take a huge step towards recovering species, such as the woodland caribou, bowhead whale and burrowing owl.
