Hello Nature Canada,
Last summer, up at my cottage on Lake Simcoe, I spotted something that looked like an ordinary moth. As I came closer it spread its wings and camouflaged itself with the pavement. It was amazing to see the face of a lion on its back!

Great shot, Alana. It is remarkable how there does appear to be a lion’s face in the photo! It appears to be a One-Eyed Sphinx, or Cerisy’s Sphinx, moth. This species is found across all Canadian provinces, and as far south as Mexico. It is most often spotted in areas with abundant poplar and willow trees.
