Hello Nature Canada,

I think that this is a Cooper's Hawk. This impressive bird was photographed in my backyard in Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada. During winter, those birds stay close to bird feeders, which are good sources of food.

I was taking bird pictures when this Hawk flew near my head as fast as lightning and I saw him attacking a House Sparrow in a splash of feathers. He flew a few meters away from me with his prey and began to eat it. I could take a few shots before he flew away. Almost every winter, I can witness this kind of situation. They are especially good at capturing Doves.

Thank you, Claudine, for this fantastic photo! Though this bird does indeed look like a Cooper's Hawk, our bird experts, with the help of additional images you sent us, actually made a different call -- a Sharp-shinned Hawk, based on the squared tail tip, and uniform cap, nape and back colour.
